New Sustainable, Equitable Development Policy Guide on HousingPolicy.org

Yesterday, the Center for Housing Policy released a new online policy guide that describes tools available to states and localities to create or preserve affordable homes in areas where transportation costs are likely to be low.  The policy guide lays out 5 areas in which there are opportunities to build in affordability:

• Land use policy and regulations that promote compact development patterns
  
• A regulatory framework that streamlines growth in targeted areas
  
• Gaining control of well-located land for development of affordable homes before prices escalate
  
• Harnessing the growth that often accompanies infrastructure investment to support housing options for families at all income levels
  
• Preservation of new and existing affordable homes over the long-term
  

Taken together, policy options in these interconnected areas can be adopted to create a comprehensive plan for ensuring families at all income levels have the opportunity to reduce the combined costs of housing and transportation, and benefit from access to opportunities and amenities afforded by new investments in transit systems and other infrastructure.
